SELF GEN PROJECT PRT11

I was curious on what would be the outcome if I were to paint buildings, but in the colour of flowers. I really like the paintings by Jose Trujillo so I decided to experiment with a similar colour range.

I really with the texture that’s created with the bricks and the contrasting colours. It’s very effective and bright. However, with so many colours the painting could become very busy and messy. I added the Lino print that I created for my previous pieces. I fell it adds a lot to the piece.

SELF GEN PROJECT PRT6

Over the past couple of days, I have been going around the city and doing quick sketches of random buildings. I feel very out of my comfort zone, as I have never really painted buildings before. However I do feel I am improving. I am mainly using either Gouache or watercolour as these are the only materials I have. I do want to continually do these quick sketches as I feel it helps with technique and could be useful in the future of my project.

SELF GEN PROJECT PRT5

Following from my previous post, I started experimenting with creating a rough texture. I started off with selecting colours that match the colour range of Edinburgh. I layered paint and then used Lino print of lines ontop with yellow. Originally I wanted the yellow lines to stand out, but they ended up patchy and faded-is. However, I really like the outcome as it has added depth and texture to the piece.

I also created a smaller Lino print of the apartments in Edinburgh, which you can spot near the castle. I really liked the effect and want to created a more larger and more detailed print, but this print was good experimenting.

I really feel the Lino print of the apartments add to the texture. I plan on going out and photographing my city. I would like to do some collage work.

WAWWA: DEVELOPMENT PRT.13

I went back to my original artwork of me in my comfort clothes, and decided to see if I could develop this piece further, as I think it looked boring and unfinished.

I decided to zoom into the whole piece, this cause the pixels to really show. I like the pixels showing and I feel it looks more digital, which I feel is appropriate as the majority of anything in general is online. I also decided to add the Queen’s slogan: ‘Sapienta et doctrina stabilitas’, meaning ‘wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times’. I thought this slogan was quite funny, as the British government hasn’t handled the coronavirus well at all, and hasn’t dealt with it with ‘wisdom and knowledge’, quite far from it. I then added on ‘right?’, in response to how the UK has dealt with the virus. I then made the slogan have a x-ray like look to add to the glitch look.

I much prefer this piece to the original piece. There’s more going on and the composition is better.

I continued with the red theme, but I wanted to play about with the theme of royalty, and comparing that to the virus and the restrictions put in place.

I photoshopped a painting of a cell I did in a previous painting and played it on top of the Royal Crest. I wanted portray that the virus is above and is becoming a ‘higher being’. And with the restrictions, we have to do what it says. In a way we’re worshipping it, obeying it in a way.

I added stressed faces of myself, to representing the angry and manic feeling I had during quarantine. I still wanted to represent the graphs in this piece as well, so I added the counting in numbers between march 2020 and December 2020.

When thinking about royalty and covid and its restrictions, I realised they all have something in common. They all have slogans. I then went on to replace the royal slogan: “Dieu et mon droit” with the covid safety slogan: “Hands.Face.Space”. I wanted to show that the virus is becoming powerful in controlling how we live, and is becoming a modern god.

I continued to have the red circle as, with its placement it looks like in over taking. I really like this piece, and I’m looking forward to developing it further.

WAWWA:DEVELOPMENT PRT.9

From the feedback given to me at Group Crits, I decided to look more into information graphs the† have been used to show the covid-19 progression with infected, deaths and cases. I also wanted to look into the connection of the virus and royalty. As coronavirus connects with the word “crown” in latin.

I started off with painting a piece with a background and similar virus imagery like my previous painting. However I used the colours red and warm colours, as the news uses red for the virus.

When thinking about the restrictions, we listen to them and follow them and in a way we obey them, which is all surrounding the virus. Whatever the virus does we relate and in a way the virus controls us, like royalty would.

I then went on to do a photoshoot of me in a worshipping position and photoshopped the painting, so the painting is outline with me. I also looked at graphs showing the deaths in five days since getting the virus and the number in each countries.

I don’t really like the piece created, however I do feel I’m going down a good path in my project and looking forward to carrying it on.

I decided to look back at the painting I did previously and experiment with it using photoshop. I wanted to make the ‘cells’ actually look like cells, especially the corona virus cell. I cut the cell painting and then layered the Lino print of cell I also did on top. I fell this really looked like the actually cell. I then went to change the colouring with more bright and neon colours. I really like the outcome and find the pieces really effective.

I also did I piece of me, with the Lino prints of the lung layering on top on me with the colouring changed. I too like this piece and feel I would like to go down this type of path with my more resolved pieces in the future.

WAWWA:DEVELOPMENT PRT.6

I started to paint a piece where there’s a detailed cell in the centre, however it wasn’t going well, it just wasn’t turning out the way a expected, and I was struggling with the colours. So, I decided to put them into photoshop and change the colours into that.

I then went on to use photoshop as a way to collage my previous work together. For the first collage piece, I wanted to show a representation of how the virus can seem to be everywhere, and I put the Lino print of the ‘air sac’ over the body as I way to make it clearer. I really like the contrast in this piece and the dreamy feel it has.

I then used the painting I did, and photoshopped it into the background of a photo I took of myself. This was to show that the virus felt it was always looming about us, even when you’re in you own bed, its hard now a days to not be thinking about it, even when you close your eyes.

The last photoshop I didn’t like as much. This piece was more a experimentation, where I just wanted to if the composition would be effective, I feel it is effective to an extent, but next time I would either more colour or change the position.

I decoded to created some Lino prints, as I wanted to develop and experiment with colour more. I was researching why is the corona cell seen as red? Turns out they make it up for visual purposes, so I started thinking about what colours would I choose the virus to be. I did this to help with experiment and see what direction it take.

The other print I created was a crown, due to the word corona being connected to the latin work ‘crown’. Then went on to experiment layering print with multiple colours. I chose vibrant colours as I enjoy working with them and I was inspired by the recent artist talk I attended by Hannah Nugent.

The influence of Hannah Nugent, I decided to paint a painting of a visual cell piece, of two cells facing each other off. It’s to represent Immune system cells and the virus cell fighting each one off.

WAWWA: DEVELOPMENT PRT.1

I’ve been mainly focusing on doing contextual research and then responding to the new information through developing and experimenting.

With research about the virus’s cells and the how the human body fights the virus with antibodies and protein cells, I decided to draw a visualisation of the cells ‘fighting’. I used the colours that the majority of science articles use when describing which cell us which. The red is the virus and the blue is the antibodies. I was struggling when making due to not feeling any ideas are motivation.

I then started trying photoshop, and really enjoyed using it! I don’t have much experience using photoshop, so I experimented with my theme and just getting use to photoshop. I do like what I created, and feel this could be a path of potential development.

The last response I have done was just an idea I got when researching, with the thought of the cells moving in the body. I wanted to try and visualise that movement.

I want to know focus on the actual human body, especially the chest and throat area as that is where the virus first affects.
