SLEF GEN PROJECT PRT9

Compared to my last piece I much prefer this piece. I think the colours are more effective together and I also feel the composition is more better placed. I added the brick pattern at the side of the artwork as I didn’t want to create too much of a contrast anywhere else in the painting. I then decided to paint with railings slightly green because I do want to start thinking about incorpaterting nature, so added then green. I do like the green, I feel it adds a surrealistic vibe. I also decided to districtly add architectural lines to add detail.

By adding the lines, it reminded me of blue prints, which you usually see when looking at building plans. I thought this could be interesting to combine with the nature aspect of the theme.

SELF GEN PROJECT PRT8

From the last piece of artwork that I previously done. I wanted to focus a little on creating a brick-like pattern. Looking into my sketchbook, I found a doodle I done with layering and colours. I felt this pattern really fit well with my current project as there’s a layering connection. Big city, croweded, many layers of buildings and adding with matching colours. I then created a small pallet that then matched the building in this next piece.

SELF GEN PROJECT PRT 7

I walked around the around of Leith Walk and photographed any buildings that took my ineterest. I really notices the amount of buildings in the city and would like to look more into incorporating layers in my project. I then collaged certain buildings and layered and paint around them. I took inspiration from Serj Fedulov and his work. I do feel this piece is quite busy, but I do plan in continuing with this as I feel it could develop into something further. I am just painting on paper, but I would like to try canvas as I feel it could look better.

I wanted to experimenting creating that layering of brick look. I do like the effect and the look, however I feel the placement and compassion is all wrong.

SELF GEN PROJECT PRT6

Over the past couple of days, I have been going around the city and doing quick sketches of random buildings. I feel very out of my comfort zone, as I have never really painted buildings before. However I do feel I am improving. I am mainly using either Gouache or watercolour as these are the only materials I have. I do want to continually do these quick sketches as I feel it helps with technique and could be useful in the future of my project.

SELF GEN PROJECT PRT5

Following from my previous post, I started experimenting with creating a rough texture. I started off with selecting colours that match the colour range of Edinburgh. I layered paint and then used Lino print of lines ontop with yellow. Originally I wanted the yellow lines to stand out, but they ended up patchy and faded-is. However, I really like the outcome as it has added depth and texture to the piece.

I also created a smaller Lino print of the apartments in Edinburgh, which you can spot near the castle. I really liked the effect and want to created a more larger and more detailed print, but this print was good experimenting.

I really feel the Lino print of the apartments add to the texture. I plan on going out and photographing my city. I would like to do some collage work.

Serj Fedulov

Serj Fedulov is a Russian artist that focuses on urban landscapes and people. He mainly uses mixed media like acrylic, collage and watercolour. I especially like his urban landscape artworks because of the thick layers of paint being used and the collage or photography. I find his work really inspiring and effective. I feel I could use this mixed media style well with my new project.

I plan on doing some quick responses with paint and sketches to see if it works.

SELF GEN PROJECT PRT3

I’ve decided that I’m going to be looking into the urban environment and nature, mainly focusing on Edinburgh City. With so much construction happening in the city right now, I want to look into the amount of greenery it has and look at the architecture of the city.

I started off by doing just simple sketches. I ended up with this response drawing of a flower and geometric shapes. I really like the piece and I liked the contrast of the detail, intricate flower compared to the simple lined shapes. In a way, it’s very similar to the city. I liked the thought of the contrast of nature and shapes and feel I could develop this into a project on urban environment.

SELF GEN PROJECT PRT2

From the previous group of responses I did, I really enjoyed working with line. So, I started experimenting with creating I line pattern, like I did before with the snake responses, but this time not using the whole page but just a small area of the page. I then do a similar pattern on top of the pattern I did, but in a contrasting colour. I really like the outcome of this, so I then outline them with black, I feel this makes the shapes stand out even more and brings for definition to the shape. I then went to experiment more of these. The pieces, in a way, remind me of the work of Keith Harring. I think due to the black outline and the simplistic form. I really enjoying experimenting with this and painting them. I’m not sure what would be the outcome if I were to carry one with developing since there’s no exact theme, but maybe I will be able to incorporate it into another project.

SELF GEN PROJECT PRT.1

For this projects, its completed self generated. I didn’t have a theme planned for this project, so I started off with making quick responses to anything. I started off with just painting whatever come to mind. I then went on to think about snakes and movement due to me drawing quite curved lines. So, I focused on that movement and started experimenting with colour and placement. I really like the look of these sketches and started making the lines bigger, less negative space on the page and more detailed. I then decided to add a snake into a sketch, which I really liked the outcome of the responses, however I’m not sure what I could develop further in the future. I would focus on the patter and shape and the movement of snakes. I am thinking of going down a more urban environment route for this project, however I’m not entirely sure yet.

RESOLVED PIECES

Our next task for this project is to create a minimum of four resolved pieces, inspired from the 2D and 3D pieces done in the previous task. I really enjoyed doing this task, and I feel this has helped in getting use to creating, and painting again!

The main materials I decided to use was black ink, pencil and a black brush pen, as w weren’t allowed to use colours. Only being able to use black was a change for me, as I usually work with colours, however I really enjoyed working with black and find really effective.

One the first resolved piece, I took inspiration from Daniel Zeller, and from one of the first 2D piece I did. I like the curved lines and the use of linear that I did in the 2D piece, and wanted ti see if I could incorporate the shapes of Zeller. I do like the piece, and the movement that is created by the curves and the contrast of the straight line, however I feel it has a more Bridget Riley feel to it, then Daniel Zeller inspired, probably from only using black ink.

For the second piece, I took my inspiration from the 3D piece I did earlier. I wanted to focus on the contrast of black and white, and by using shapes. This is my favourite piece out of the four. I originally wasn’t going to have a gradient, however I’m glad I choose to do so, as it make the white shapes, really stand out and makes the black more effective.

The third piece is my least favourite. I really struggled on this piece. I originally wanted it to be solely rectangles and squares overlapping, like the piece that inspired it. However I felt there was something missing, as the piece seemed bland and boring. Instead of leaving the piece and then coming back to it, I just kept adding, and decided to add the curved patterns that I did in the first resolved piece. I feel the shapes and patterns don’t work, its too busy and the placement is all wrong. Maybe if I placed the survey pattern in the middle, with the more black shapes in the background it could of been more successful. However, I am glad I did it, as it reminded me to take your time and if something isn’t working, leave it and then go back to it.

For the fourth piece, I wanted to focus on the smaller shapes created when overlapping multiple shapes. I really like this piece, and I feel I was successful in showing the shapes. I do question my decision on adding lines in the circles, as I feel it is a bit busy, but I do like the effect it gives. For this piece I let the shapes blend into the background, as I wanted to see the effect it would have on the overall contrast on colours. I do like the effect it has, but I feel though, I would of had more of a sharper contrast, as that was my main focus.
