M.J 1 – PRT 10 Bad Compositions

  1. I tried to have contrasting colours that didn’t match to see if it had an effect on the composition. When looking at trying to create bad compositions, its all-out controlling the viewers’ eyes, and how they lead through the painting.

2. I feel this was a success in being a bad composition. I feel there should be more negative space at the top and maybe some brushstrokes at the top left of the piece.

3. At first, I followed the plan I had sketched out before, however I added the lines without thinking. This shows your subconscious automatically knows about positive compositions.

4. With all these experiments, I wanted to use opposite colours, yet I feel in this piece the colours work. For it to be a successful bad composition there should of been more negative space.

M.J 1 – PRT 9 Good Compositions.

  1. GOLDEN RATIO RULE

In the first picture, I used the golden ratio rule to plan out the composition. For the colours, I decided to use darker tones compared to the background or opposite colours that contrast well.

2. GOLDEN RATIO AND SYMMETRY

I experimented with using the golden ratio rule and symmetry. I went with using contrasting colours. However I feel this wasn’t successful since the colours don’t go well together. I feel this would be a better piece if there was more negative space.

3. RABATMENT OF RECTANGLE AND GOLDEN RATIO

I wanted to use these two rules to see if I can balance negative space with a more busier space. I liked the colours that I used and the layout of the piece. I feel the colours go well with the background.

4. RULE OF THIRDS

This is my favourite piece. I feel the colours really make the piece stand out, since there’re contrasting colours. I decided to add more lighter tones of blues to give the piece more depth.

I also looked rabatement of rectangle for the piece and the effects that negative space can have on a piece.

CONCEPTUAL-PRT 6

I really liked the look of my pervious conceptual pieces – the cut out of the radios in the centre of the blank page – so, I decided to repeat the composition, but this time I looked up radio stations in Rhodes, Greece where I grew up. I then stuck the radio stations onto the pages, and it had an effective outcome. I really like the shapes created by the cut outs. I also did some experimentation with collage and the negative effects on the printer. I liked the aesthetic of the the collage pieces, but that the radio station pieces, are stronger, as they hold more of the idea, rathe than the aesthetic.

CONCEPTUAL-PRT5

With Miereles’s Sculpture piece in mind, I would like to do a piece based on radio and what they can represent. Different types on radios or speakers and have a different effect depending at the person. For example, if you were to present a very old radio of the 1950s, it can hold a memory, different from a radio of the present. Also, radio may be able to represent culture on current times. I would like to delve into this idea.

I cut out and stuck on to paper four different types on radios in no particular order. I like the contrast on each radio, however in the future I would like think more into the types on radio and the representation on each radio and why.

2D PRACTICE – PRT 8

I feel really happy with the compositions of my work, but I want to look more into the other medias hat I’m incorporating with my work. Today I focus on the cut outs of acrylic paint hat I’ve been using. I did varies brushstrokes of acrylic paint, in different colours, using a palette knife and a paint brush. The more basic colours I plan on spray painting then different colours and maybe trying to add charcoal. I do however need to wait for the paint to dry. I plan on using charcoal on the more circular shapes to see if the charcoal makes the swirls stand out more. I also feel it would be interesting to see what effect ink would have.

2D PRACTICE PRT 6

During the October break, I was doodling with squares and layering them and in between the lines I filled with the line pattern. I really liked this effect and how all the lines in each section are different and going in different direction. Since doing collage, I thought it would be interesting to see if I could recreate the doodle but with collage. I painted surfaces and and then drew the pattern onto the base and then collaged them. I like the contrasting colours and it reminds me of Minna Gilligan’s work. I plan to make copies and experiment more with the colour changer on the printer and repeatedly layer. Maybe even try acetate and layer that?

2D COLLAGE – PRT 1

This week we are looking at collage. I started off with creating small line drawings for the foreground of the pieces. I then decided to layer that print on top of a piece I did when we were experimenting with printmaking. I really like the effect of the line patterns and the colour of the print in the background, it would be interesting if it was turned negative. I then went on to create bases with acrylic paint and layered them with the patterns created. I noticed however that my collage pieces had a acrylic background and a pattern in the foreground, I wandered what would happen if I switched it around. For this I created line drawings as bases and tomorrow I plan to experiment with the negative printer techniques and switching the patterns and acrylic. I feel I was very successful today and started off well.

Pia Fries

One artist that I’ve been looking into is Pia Fries. A lot of her work consists of thick layers of paint and negative space. She also uses watercolour and sharp quick brushstrokes. When it comes to colour Pia uses vibrant, contrasting colours. With the backgrounds of her work being white her work is very eye-catching. She has also used collage and it can sometimes seem like a painting, I would like to try and create collages that seem like paintings. I like how she uses negative space and the loose patterns in her work. The sharp brush strokes with thick layers of paint create depth and texture. When experimenting with my work, especially with acrylic I try to thick of Pia Fries, especially with her use of negative space.

DAY TO DAY PART 2

For the final brief of The Day Today I was away on holidays so I didn’t stick to the brief I instead wanted to see what would inspired me while on holiday. I noticed the loose patterns and shapes that the water created and I decided I wanted to explore more of that. I started of with some loose patterns and found the repeating circular lines really effective, so experimented with larger circular brush motions in acrylic, I like how the brush hair created lots of lines. I then went on to draw onto of the circle with a stick to create some sort of line drawing of the waves. I found this really effective and tried it out with different colours and layered it, however once doing that I found it quite messy. I then did multiple circles in blue tones and then with printer copied some lines onto it. I found this really effective and interesting as you can change the colour of the paint in the printer. I definitely would to use this in future pieces. I would like to do more layering with paint and with the printer. I feel this could become an interesting sculpture piece, if I was to use light, thin materials and maybe to try using sound? I really enjoyed doing this I feel I could really experiment more with the piece I have.
