FINAL PIECE

For my final piece I decided that I will be collecting the small video created and combining them to create a long video. I also decided to incorporate my photographs that were taken.

Originally I was just going to have the videos and pictures on their own, but I felt that was boring and wouldn’t have the effect I want. I then video myself walking, and only capturing my feet as they walk across the street, also recording the sound around me.

I then combined everything together, which I feel created a successful outcome. I really like the video and I think having the audio was the right choice.

The video is about memory and looking back of the memories of the place you live. The small insignificant memories that you don’t even know you know. Thats what I feel creates a city.

Decided to continue with what I did previously and create another small video. This is of a certain place, where I remember falling due to shoes that didn’t fit me and I scraped my knee.

I really enjoy making these.

I noticed that the art workshop building near where I lived had been nocked down. Now, standing in its place is a giant hole with large black fencing surrounding it. I was really enjoyed and disappointed to see that go. I decided to create a video as me illustrating onto of a photography of the black fence. I’m re-drawing the building I remember.

I really like the small video and I would like to see it incorporated into another piece maybe.

SELF GEN PROJECT PRT 22

With the last week coming up, our final piece is due. I have decided that I do want a final piece, a more resolved artwork.

I’ve decided to continue with theme of memory and what I remember when looking at a certain street.

I walked around Edinburgh and I was thinking of things that have had changed, small one on objects that are in the street. I walked pass a certain telephone box, one I use to walk past everyday from school. I noticed that since I last properly saw it, the graffiti had change since last I remember. I decided not to incorporate colours, as I felt the image itself was effective. I wouldn’t say this is my final piece on any level, but I would like to incorporate it.

A similar thing happened to again when walking pass a parking lot meter. However I have never notice much about the meter, only that when I walked past I remember how my friend in high school decided to push me into the meter as a joke. I ended up completely smashing into it and falling over. I decided to do the same with meter as I did with the phone box.

I really like theses piece as a couple in a way.

RESOLVED PIECES

Our next task for this project is to create a minimum of four resolved pieces, inspired from the 2D and 3D pieces done in the previous task. I really enjoyed doing this task, and I feel this has helped in getting use to creating, and painting again!

The main materials I decided to use was black ink, pencil and a black brush pen, as w weren’t allowed to use colours. Only being able to use black was a change for me, as I usually work with colours, however I really enjoyed working with black and find really effective.

One the first resolved piece, I took inspiration from Daniel Zeller, and from one of the first 2D piece I did. I like the curved lines and the use of linear that I did in the 2D piece, and wanted ti see if I could incorporate the shapes of Zeller. I do like the piece, and the movement that is created by the curves and the contrast of the straight line, however I feel it has a more Bridget Riley feel to it, then Daniel Zeller inspired, probably from only using black ink.

For the second piece, I took my inspiration from the 3D piece I did earlier. I wanted to focus on the contrast of black and white, and by using shapes. This is my favourite piece out of the four. I originally wasn’t going to have a gradient, however I’m glad I choose to do so, as it make the white shapes, really stand out and makes the black more effective.

The third piece is my least favourite. I really struggled on this piece. I originally wanted it to be solely rectangles and squares overlapping, like the piece that inspired it. However I felt there was something missing, as the piece seemed bland and boring. Instead of leaving the piece and then coming back to it, I just kept adding, and decided to add the curved patterns that I did in the first resolved piece. I feel the shapes and patterns don’t work, its too busy and the placement is all wrong. Maybe if I placed the survey pattern in the middle, with the more black shapes in the background it could of been more successful. However, I am glad I did it, as it reminded me to take your time and if something isn’t working, leave it and then go back to it.

For the fourth piece, I wanted to focus on the smaller shapes created when overlapping multiple shapes. I really like this piece, and I feel I was successful in showing the shapes. I do question my decision on adding lines in the circles, as I feel it is a bit busy, but I do like the effect it gives. For this piece I let the shapes blend into the background, as I wanted to see the effect it would have on the overall contrast on colours. I do like the effect it has, but I feel though, I would of had more of a sharper contrast, as that was my main focus.

GRADED UNIT – PRT. 6

For this piece, I decided to paint it onto a cereal box. I got inspiration for this piece when I went out for a food shop. When waiting in the queue to go into the supermarket, I noticed several signs with “Essential” written. At first, I thought this was silly as its obvious that in this current state, we must only buy what is necessary. However, when I got into the shop and started collecting the food, the first item I went for was the Kellog’s Crunchy Nut Cornflakes. I thought nothing of it, until I went home. This experience for me opened my eyes at what we think is essential in our lives and how blinded we are at what we need to just get by.

The two people in the top right corner of the piece, is to show the glass barriers in the supermarkets and to represent a scene I witnessed. That scene being, I man coming too close to a member of staff, and when asked to step back got aggressive towards the member of staff. As this scene was unfolding, you could sense the panic and anger in the store, with people getting frustrated and wanting to keep a distance.

I do like this piece and feel it was successful, however I feel I made the piece too literate at what I wanted to show. Also I feel the colours used are too dark and in the future try more lighter colours, as I feel the background colour drags everything down. With all the artwork I’ve created before this piece, I haven’t planed out, however I decided to plan this one out before hand. With planning this piece, it helped me to think on what I wanted to show and represent, but I feel it wasn’t as personal due to the fact I planned in. Where as with the other pieces I created out of emotion.

Since many of my more resolved pieces have been square shaped, I decided to try a piece with a more rectangular shape. I wanted to try creating a depth with the lines and make the piece look like the lines are closer to the viewer.I do like the colours I used as I feel they contrast in a way that shows off the colours.

However, I don’t like the outcome of the painting. I feel the placing of the lines don’t match with composition and there’s too much highlighting on against the darker tones, which makes the piece seem clustered. I feel I used too many different light tones against the darker tones, creating a lot of contrast, but not in a harmonious way.

Based on the 1st artwork I’d done when looking at sources, I really liked the outcome of that artwork, so I decided to recreate that piece, but using opposite colours as I wanted to see if it would be successful. Since I’m looking int negative space, I wanted to add a more crowded surrounding to see if negative space has an effect on a piece.

I felt this was a successful piece as I feel the colours used really makes the painting stand out. It’s a very busy piece, and at first, I thought it was too busy and therefore didn’t work, but after looking over it I’ve come to realise it works really well.

I did struggle when painting this artwork, due to figuring each opposite colour compared to the colours I used in the first painting and trying to create depth by using only quite vibrant colours. The light brown and blues were the main colours being used for the depth and to add contrast, but I also lightened colours, especially red, using white paint, which I feel helped the piece to become brighter.

I was originally going to add lines, similar to the ones seen in Julie Mehretu’s work, but decided against it as I feel the piece would become too messy and the contrast of the black lines and bright colour would clash. I think I made the right decision in not adding the lines.

Since the only part of the painting that has negative space is the middle, I thought it would be clustered and messy, but I think with all the colours that have been used, it balances the composition out.

I wanted to experiment more the composition and negative space. I decided to position the lighter area at the end and have a slightly more crowded surrounding. At first, I was just going to have sharp lines, but decided to add more curved lines as I feel it added more movement to the piece. As I did with previous piece, I added a mix of light and dark tones to give depth to the piece.

When I saw the work of Julie Mehretu piece… add the name of title. I like the lines used in her piece and I thought it would look interesting added with the lines I created. I feel it added movement and detail into the piece. I also outlined the curves with pen to make them more outstanding, which I feel was a success.

I gathered pictures of trees with sunlight shining through, as I feel it connects to the previous pieces I’ve done due to the lines created. I decided to use similar colours as the source pictures and wanted to recreate the pictures but in a abstract way as I feel it will help me to understand compositions and I wanted to experiment with negative space and understand it more.

I wanted to recreate the source picture as I feel it will help with understanding contrasting colours due to the extreme light tones and dark tones. I originally wanted to just ave the lines in a dark blue, however I feel I made the piece too flat so I added a more range of colours and light tones against the darker tones to add more depth. With the strong constrast on the light and dark colours it makes the the piece less flat.

I was going to have the lines going all around the outer piece, but I wanted to see if the negative piece at the top works better. I do feel it was the right choice to leave the top open, but I plan on doing a piece with a more crowed surrounding and use opposite colours compared to this current piece.
