GRADED UNIT – PRT. 3

When I finished the book “widow Basquiat”, a particular quote stood out to me: “Walls were paper and trains were book.” I really liked this quotation and quickly wrote in down on the canvas. I then slowly started to add more onto the canvas. The painting isn’t finished yet, as I want to keep on adding to the paintings throughout this lockdown. This isn’t my favourite piece, as I’m not really sure what the piece means, however I don’t see that as a bad thing.

For this project, I originally wanted to only use spray paint, however due to limited resources I will be mainly using acrylic, pastel and some oil paint.

FUTURA2000 (LEONARD McGURR) 1955-present

Born in New York, McGurr started off doing illegal graffiti on subway trains in the early 1970s and by the 1980s, had work showed in the Fun Gallery, along side artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Harring. McGurr then went on to tour with the Clash and perform graffiti with then on stage. In 1985 he attended to first meeting for the graffiti and urban art movement and currently, now works as a successful graphic artist and gallery artists.

When looking at Futura’s work, I really like the colours and the combination of graffiti and abstract art that can be seen in his work. In a lot of his work, Futura uses contrasting colours when it comes to the foreground and background, which I personal really like and connects to my personal interests in art.

JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT (1960-1988)

Born and based in New York, Jean-Michel Basquiat was from Haiti and Puerto Rican decent. Basquiat started off doing graffiti on the streets of New York under the name SAMO, and then decided to go with his real name Jean-Michel Basquiat and quickly grew to fame in to 1980s.

Since reading the book ‘Widow Basquiat” by Jennifer Clement, I’ve been very inspired by the work at Jean Michael Basquiat. In his work, I like the use of layering in colours and the variety of colours being used. I find his artwork to be some sort of collage piece. In the book ‘Widow Basquiat”, it said that a lot of time Jean-Michel would copy quotes from cartoons to cereal boxes and paint the quotations into his artwork. I would like to try this with my own work as I feel it connects well with my project as I’m surrounded by those quotations every day at the moment. As my work id very childlike, I feel Basquiat is a good influence to look at.

2D PRACTICE PT.1

From our last project “The Day To Day” we had to take an image from the pieces we create and develop that piece into 2D practice. My precious piece was focus on waves, so I decided with repeating of patterns, mainly focusing on line work and trying to make to the viewer feel calm, looking at colour and image placement.

I started off with drawing a simple straight line drawing and repeating it, to which I find to be very effective as the small gaps in the patterns also make a patterns. I then went on to do another patterns with straight lines, but added a circle. I find the two patterns really nice and decided to base my mains patterns off these and how ca I create this patterns in different 2D media. I started off experimenting with acrylic paint, ink and bleach. I did like the effect the bleach had, however the colour of the ink and bleach, I didn’t feel went well with my work so decided to focus mainly on the acrylic and paint a large piece of just strikes in colours I feel was calming, that being; blues, green and yellow. With the acrylic paint, I started with making simple circle shapes, to get a lined texture and also random stokes to see what certain pressure might effect the outcome of the pattern being created. Even though I found the colours and the patterns made with acrylic were nice, it was boring. So, I decided to draw on top using maker pen and recreate the strain line patterns and a more wavy patterns, which was very successful and would like to use this more in the experimenting proses.

I don’t plan on abandoning the beach and ink pieces as they could be effective if printed in a negative colour or layered. The pieces that had been created were successful and my next objective is to experiment with layering through using the printer and collage.

DAY TO DAY PART 2

For the final brief of The Day Today I was away on holidays so I didn’t stick to the brief I instead wanted to see what would inspired me while on holiday. I noticed the loose patterns and shapes that the water created and I decided I wanted to explore more of that. I started of with some loose patterns and found the repeating circular lines really effective, so experimented with larger circular brush motions in acrylic, I like how the brush hair created lots of lines. I then went on to draw onto of the circle with a stick to create some sort of line drawing of the waves. I found this really effective and tried it out with different colours and layered it, however once doing that I found it quite messy. I then did multiple circles in blue tones and then with printer copied some lines onto it. I found this really effective and interesting as you can change the colour of the paint in the printer. I definitely would to use this in future pieces. I would like to do more layering with paint and with the printer. I feel this could become an interesting sculpture piece, if I was to use light, thin materials and maybe to try using sound? I really enjoyed doing this I feel I could really experiment more with the piece I have.

THE DAY TODAY 5

For the final of day of the week long project “The Day Today”, I decided to do a piece based on an article about LGBT asylum claimers being rejected. By the list given in the article of what countries the LGBT claimers were from, many of the flags of said countries had green in them, so I painted the background green. I personally don’t like the outcome of this piece as I feel it’s too literate and the composition is boring. If I was to do this again, I would like to have add more colours to the background and more layering to add texture. To delve more into LGBT flags would also be interesting.

Modern Art Galleries 1&2

Went to Modern Art Gallery One and Two, to see the contemporary art collection and The Cut and Paste Exhibition. I really enjoyed the Cut and Paste exhibition, however my favourite pieces were from the contemporary art collection. One of my favourite pieces was by Anya Gallaccio. Anya Gallaccio does a lot of sculpturing and is known to associate her work with symbolic connections to history, culture and politics. Her installation “Red on Green” is of 10,000 roses is a rectangle shape in the middle of the room. The thing I noticed was the smell of the roses and the strong colour of the roses. If I was to think of what movement it would be in, it would be contemporary, maybe dadaism, due to it being a found object and the theme I feel would destruction, as the roses are slowly dying. My second artist was Charles Avery, to which he had an installation of an old projector, projecting animated birds and with the shadow of the outlined box, it gives the illusion of the birds being trapped inside. This could be in the movement of surrealism, with the theme of fantasy. Michael Armitage’s piece is oil paint on lumbago bark cloth. I love the colours that were used and is in the contemporary movement, however I feel it could be surrealism. My fourth piece was by Francis Campbell and I would say in the movement of impressionism. The pice was painted when Francis was in Venice. I love the thick brushstrokes visible and the fact you can still see the wood panel the it was painted on.

THE DAY TODAY 4

As I was reading the newspaper for todays article I noticed a page with a man saying how he eats red meat everyday, and the benefits of this. Underneath this article there was a smaller Coolum about how being vegan has a 22% chance of heart disease and where meat eaters are at higher risk. Turning a page there was a advert for chicken at cheap prices. I decided to just start making objects with wire straight instead of planing. With wire and tape I attempted to make a heart, but didn’t like the final outcome. With seeing the Cut and Paste Exhibition yesterday I wanted to do collage so I painted the background green, since the colour is associated with health and yet disease. I wanted to show the irony and the ways of consumerism in the media when it comes to being healthy and what to eat. I was going to attach the heart I made to the centre of the collage piece, but decided against it and instead painted a pepper, but it could also possibly be a heart. This would have to be my most least liked piece I’ve done this week. I don’t like the colours or composition, and I feel it would of been better if I made a larger heart and collaged on the heart instead of just a piece of paper. It was however good to go out of my comfort zone from planning and just creating, I do feel it helped me to experiment more open minded and would like to start working that way more often.

THE DAY TODAY 3

For the third day of the current project “The Day Today” I choose an article about the riots happening in Hong Kong and how the bill has been lifted. As I was reading the article I started to doodle things that first came to mind, that being the outline of china and the Bauhinia Blakeana flower, which you can see on Hong Kong’s flag. I then went into a more detailed flower with the outline of china, however I decided to paint the land blue, due to police spraying rioters with blue dye. With the blue contrasting with the colours of the flower, it makes the piece stand out. As many people in Hong Kong were trying to hide their identity, I decided to write “Anonymous”, I wanted to try and recreate a young Childs’ writing to represent that the majority of the rioters were youths. For a final detail and to show technology and connecting with the rest of the world, I decided to add the dial code. If given the chance I would like to retcreate this piece and do it as a collage, with a real Bauhinia Blakeana flower and add recites to it, as Hong Kong is known for technology and shopping. It would also be more effective I feel if it were a larger scale. The current final outcome however, I do like even as a sketch to base of a piece from in the future.
