DRAWING FOR DRAWING’S SAKE

With the observational drawing we did in the last project, we had to create observational drawing from those drawings, through experimenting with using market making, compositions, scale and shapes. I wanted to focus on the textures, and se if I can recreate the feel or portray what the object in the installations felt like.

The installation with the vase and straw chair, I wanted to recreate the texture of the chair, so I sketched out the vase and got a imprint of the chair’s texture, I then decided to go over the vase sketch with a pen as I felt it would get lost with the harsh tones created by the chair. I really like this piece, and I succeeded in recreating that texture.

I again wanted to recreate the texture of the porcelain object, so I decided to smudge and use that to create some sort of depth to the face. Its been awhile since drawing any form of faces and I did enjoy drawing this piece, however I feel it wasn’t as successful as I wanted it to be. I feel the piece is boring and still feels very 2D.

The rest of the drawings, I experimented with masking tape, black pen and using a rubber. I did enjoy this task and its encouraged me to experiment more with texture and composition and also how to create texture with a limited amount of materials. I feel the piece with the rubbed out loose lines, with the black lining as well, would have to be my favourite, as I feel with the contrast of tones, its really effective.

SEE YOU, SEE ME

For this project, we had to photograph our own home installations that represent our current environment that surrounds us. We then upload our installations and create observational drawings from other colleagues’ installations.

I really enjoyed this task, and got use to sketching and warming up the creative mind. For my observational pieces, I decided to combine different installations into one piece. I feel it gave certain pieces a surrealistic style. We had to only use monochromatic materials, so I only use mainly pencil and black ink pen. I experimented by using my left hand on certain pieces, not looking at the page and continues line. I also decided to combine two techniques into one pice, so I might use my left hand drawing one object and drawing in more detail with the other object.

Im really happy with outcome of my pieces, and looking forward to getting into the habit on sketching and experimenting again!
